What is Double Deep Pallet Racking
Double Deep Pallet Racking is similar to selective racking only pallets are stored two deep with single entry racks and four pallets deep in a double entry rack configuration. The storage system reduces the number of aisles needed which can increase pallet storage by as much as 10-15% depending on racking layout. Furthermore, double deep, double entry racks increase storage density by reducing the aisle to rack ratio.
Double-Deep Pallet Racking is a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) system. This type of racking reduces the stock accessibility due to 50% of the SKU’s being behind pallets when storage locations are at full capacity. Although, this racking system makes good use of all available locations, is best used when each SKU is limited to only several pallets. Therefore, double-deep racking is better suited to stock that has a medium to long term shelf life. Highly perishable goods aren’t recommended for this style of racking due to the LIFO racking type.
Double Deep Pallet Racking requires specialized pallet handling equipment using ether a specialized forklift or a standard unit with a double deep handling attachment. Additionally, upper levels may need to be fitted with pallet safety bars to assist forklift drivers in locating pallets, help reduce accidental impact damage and fork truck operator errors.
